Finishing

Get a Quick Quote

The wood flooring process of finishing is perhaps the most exciting and rewarding part of the whole floor sanding process. It’s where the experts are separated from the amateurs. The final result depends on how well the previous steps were carried out and the skill of the team involved.

Before applying the finish, there are some vital processes that must be 100% completed.

Sanding the Edges

The heavy German and Swedish designed machines we use for sanding are usually unable to sand the edges and other hard-to-reach places properly. This can lead to an uneven finish if not properly attended to.

We use carbide hand scrapers to sand the edges of the floor and other hard to reach places. However, there is a caveat when it comes to using carbide hand scrapers that a lot of our competitors don’t take into account. The advantage of using carbide hand scraper is that it assures an extremely smooth finish, but this is also its disadvantage because these very smooth areas will respond differently to the finish compared to other areas.

For GJP Floor Sanding, this ‘little’ discrepancy is unacceptable, because an even finish that is rich and consistent is at the heart of our promise.

We use 60 – 80 grit sandpaper to rough up those places to give it a similar feel and texture to the rest of the floor. This will ensure that the finish of your wooden floor is uniform; and stunning.

Screening

Screening is the next stage after the sanding. The truth is that you could go ahead and apply a finish without screening, as many other companies do and still obtain a nice finish — especially if you were diligent with the other steps.

But screening is important if you are a perfectionist like us and want the best for your home.

At this stage, we run finer abrasive, usually between 120 – 150 grit, over your entire floor thoroughly till we obtain a very smooth surface.

This step helps to further blend the hard-to-reach places with the whole floor surface, and removes any minor scratches that may have occurred during the sanding process.

Refinishing

This is what the whole build up has been about. This is where we finally deliver the beauty we’ve promised. Usually, we will use a finish we’ve already agreed upon with the client or just apply the original finish. Some clients prefer we make all the call and choose a finish that will blend with the room.

Whatever you choose, the goal is the same: to transform your floor into something befitting a royalty.

Sealing the Floor

The next step is to seal the floor to protect it and ensure the result lasts for years. We normally use a lacquer or oil because it is practical, hard-wearing and attractive. It also requires little maintenance.

We take care to use only the best lacquer available in the market because this step is a crucial aspect in the whole process. The water-based lacquers and hard-wax oil we use are eco-friendly and have low odour.

If you choose to do it yourself, you will do well to read the manufacturer’s instructions before applying them. Not all lacquers are created equally. We recommend those produced by Bonakemi, Becka Acroma and Osmo.
